About Us:

The Ohio Ethics Commission promotes ethics in public service to strengthen the public's confidence that Government business is conducted with impartiality and integrity. The Commission was established as part of the Ohio Ethics Law in 1973.

The Ethics Law, effective January 1, 1974, created new ethical standards for public officials and employees by: requiring personal financial disclosure; creating new restrictions upon unethical conduct with criminal sanctions; and establishing uniform review of ethics issues by statewide commissions of the three branches of government. The Commission has jurisdiction over Ohio's Executive Branch that is for all public officials and employees at the state and local levels of government, except legislators, judges, and their staffs.

Job Duties

What You'll Do:

Serving at the pleasure of the Executive Director, the Ohio Ethics Commission is seeking an experienced Advisory Staff Attorney to help further its mission to promote ethics in public service and support the day-to-day operation of the agency.

The following duties will be typical for this position. Other duties may be required or assigned:

Serves as a management level attorney providing legal counsel & advice to public officials, Chief Advisory Attorney, Executive Director, Commissioners on policy development and implementation relating to advisory functions of the Ethics Commission.

Conducts legal research on the Ethics Law and related statutes and provides advice for Commission staff and the public about the application of the Ohio Ethics Law and related statutes.

Reviews and analyses proposed Ethics Commission administrative rule changes.

Reviews, revises, and edits advisory opinions and other materials written by advisory staff.

Responds to telephone, email and written inquiries from public officials and employees, and the general public on the Ohio Ethics Commission and the application of the Ohio Ethics Law and related statutes and updates advisory files, records, and logs.

Answers questions for Commission staff, public officials, and employees about the financial disclosure law and requirements.

Acts as lead attorney in maintenance and administration of R.C. 102.04 (D) statements by public officials and employees.

Attends and participates in Commission and Advisory Committee meetings and prepares charts, opinions, memoranda, statistical information and other advisory section related materials to be presented at the meetings. Takes meeting notes to be included in the meeting minutes.

Provides advice and prepares legal memoranda, articles, and other documents for Ethics Commission and staff.

Presents speeches on Ethics Law and related statutes.

Qualifications

MINIMUM CLASS QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT :

Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of Revised Code; 12 mos. exp. as licensed attorney; 6 mos. exp. in employee training & development.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT :

Completion of 24 credit hours of continuing legal education from accredited programs for applicable two-year reporting period pursuant to Rule X of Rules of Government of Bar of Ohio. Current certificate of registration pursuant to Rule VII of Rules of Government of Bar of Ohio
