DescriptionLiberty Mutual Surety has an excellent opportunity for an experienced Surety underwriting professional as a Regional Underwriting Officer on our Contract Surety team. This role provides underwriting and product line leadership for the East region. In this role, you will work with the Chief Underwriting Officer and other Regional Underwriting Officers to establish and implement underwriting policies & procedures for the unit and to ensure compliance. Additionally, you will oversee day to day activities and development of assigned Contract underwriting staff and will be responsible for all underwriting activities and results within the region, which includes managing profitability, risk mitigation, growth strategies, metrics for specific accounts, and the overall account portfolio. Additionally, you will work closely with the Chief Underwriting Officer to ensure consistency in risk appetite and to actively monitor and manage the account portfolio.

Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all underwriting results and activity for assigned territory within the East region for a contract book of business.
- Help the field build and grow a profitable Contract book of business in an assigned territory, partnering with regional field underwriting staff and Home Office Underwriting Officers.
- Execute long-term strategy set by the Chief Underwriting Officer in the assigned region using analytical tools to review, monitor, and adjust the account portfolio, underwriting guidelines, and overall strategy as needed.
- Responsible for the underwriting decisions of any account beyond the authority of the Underwriting Officer and recommends to the Chief Underwriting Officer if above his/her authority.
- Creates and drives a culture of commitment to success, continuous improvement, enthusiasm, collaborative problem solving, and profitable partnering with strategic business clients.
- Hire, develop, and retain a highly qualified and tenured Surety Home Office underwriting team for the assigned territory. Facilitates the education and development of the assigned Home Office underwriting staff along with the field underwriting organization to ensure and maintain a high level of competence in dealing with complex accounts and issues.
- Under the direction of the Chief Underwriting Officer, helps to develop, monitor, and maintain underwriting guidelines to ensure compliance.
- Collaborate with Contract product line managers and various stakeholders in the assigned region to develop and implement an effective business development plan for the region.
- Develop and cultivate, directly or indirectly, relationships with agents and national brokers active in soliciting and placing Contract surety business
- Travels, along with designated staff, periodically to meet with accounts.
- Actively involved in ongoing training initiatives for surety's contract product line.
- BA/BS in Business Administration or related field typically required.
- A minimum of 15 years' experience expected, including progressive surety underwriting and management responsibility, with an emphasis on underwriting Large Contract accounts desired.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and lead managerial staff and/or region, preferably in multiple offices.
- Must possess in-depth knowledge of the surety industry, products and operations, as well as the ability to analyze and consult on the most complex surety accounts.
- Expert level analytical and decision-making skills.
- Proven track-record of strong business achievement using solid business judgment, and the ability to foster collaborative and strategic thinking is required. Expert level and proven consulting and negotiating skills required.
- Ability to develop relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, (e.g. express ideas clearly and concisely), and demonstrated success working with internal and external senior-level Executives is required.
