Claims Examiner - Casualty Overview The Casualty Claims Examiner is responsible for managing a portfolio of moderately complex general liability claims across both admitted and excess & surplus lines products. This includes exposure to construction-related risks and defect-related property damage claims, handling each file from initial reporting through final resolution. This position requires strong coverage interpretation, investigative skills, and the ability to assess liability and damages while clearly documenting and communicating coverage determinations. The role also involves negotiating with claimants and legal representatives, ensuring accurate and timely payments, and maintaining a high standard of service throughout the claims process. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful communicator and analytical problem-solver who can effectively collaborate with insureds, brokers, legal counsel, and internal stakeholders while balancing customer experience, financial results, and regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities Manage a caseload of moderately complex casualty claims, including general liability and select construction-related exposures Handle claims across multiple product lines, applying sound judgment and seeking guidance on more complex or high-exposure matters Perform coverage evaluations and interpret policy language; draft coverage position letters and support more complex scenarios as needed Conduct detailed investigations, assess liability and damages, and establish and adjust reserves based on claim developments Coordinate with defense counsel, experts, and third-party vendors to execute effective strategies and manage costs Assist in developing litigation and settlement strategies aligned with claim facts and business objectives Participate in mediations, settlement discussions, and negotiations with claimants and attorneys Maintain thorough, timely, and well-organized claim documentation in accordance with internal standards and regulatory requirements Identify and escalate high-severity or complex issues to senior team members as appropriate Core Values Client Focus - Prioritizing strong relationships and delivering responsive, high-quality service Innovative Thinking - Encouraging new ideas and continuous improvement Balance - Supporting both professional success and personal well-being Simplicity - Striving for efficiency and clarity in processes and communication Accountability - Taking ownership of outcomes and learning from results Qualifications Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex information Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities with sound decision-making skills High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion Customer-focused approach with a solutions-oriented mindset Ability to build relationships and collaborate across teams while also working independently Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities Effective negotiation and influencing skills, including navigating challenging conversations Adaptability in a fast-paced, evolving, and largely virtual work environment Respect for diverse perspectives and the ability to work across varied backgrounds Proactive, ownership-driven approach to managing work from start to finish Comfort working in a lean, growth-oriented environment with evolving priorities Required Experience & Education Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience 3-6+ years of experience handling casualty claims Background in general liability claims required; construction-related exposure preferred Active adjuster license(s) or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe Preferred Qualifications Industry designations such as CPCU, AIC, or similar Compensation & Benefits Flexible time off program and paid holidays Retirement savings plan (e.g., 401k) Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability Health savings and flexible spending account options Parental leave benefits Work Environment This role operates in a professional office or remote setting and requires regular use of standard business tools and systems.
