Our Small Commercial New Business team is currently seeking an Underwriting Director.
This is a full time, exempt role.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Small Commercial Underwriting Director is an experienced leader that demonstrates mastery of financial acumen, strategy development, leadership, and execution. The Director is expected to have broad influence/impact and is able to create followership amongst field and senior leadership. This includes being a thought partner in analyzing trends and developing regional strategy, maintaining profitability of the book, implementing and executing projects, actions, and assisting with agency management. The Director is able to attract, retain, engage, mentor and develop talent, including other managers.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
- Expertly monitors the achievement of Small Commercial Lines results including growth, profit, quality, and service metrics leveraging data and analytics resource and reporting.
- Takes lead in developing underwriting strategy and clearly articulates and aligns this strategy to direct reports to show impact and results.
- Managing multiple supervisors and managers and driving territory results through these leaders
- Ensure workflows are followed appropriately and within established timelines; identify and recommend workflow enhancements to improve team results.
- Interact with leadership, fellow team members, field leadership, RE’s, RVP’s, SCSM’s to ensure responsibilities are being met.
- Collaborates with State Management and Home Office UW team regarding performance and strategy execution.
- Recommends enhancements and ideas for improvement to results where applicable, communicates, and implements within team.
- Participates in State Management, including playbook development, rate reviews and development of underwriting strategy.
- Planning and implementation of portfolio management projects/actions along with monitoring execution and success.
- Sets underwriting goals and development plans aligned with business strategies and individual development needs; conducts annual performance reviews for direct reports based on these goals.
- Handle underwriting referrals from team within assigned authority level.
- Lead and participate in quality audits/file reviews including action plans monitoring work and development of team members.
- Manage underwriter performance on a consistent basis across direct reports including Team Leads and Managers.
- Leads team meetings and participates in other business unit or organizational meetings as directed.
- Works with AVP/VP on resource allocation needs and underwriter assignments.
- Consults with AVP/VP on employment, termination, and disciplinary action recommendations; executes agreed upon employee actions.
- Leadership responsibility for Affinity Programs.
KEY MEASURES OF SUCCESS:
- Attainment of Small CL unit growth, profit, business mix, agency management and service/responsiveness metrics.
- Development of team members as measured by quality reviews, service metrics and overall feedback from external customers such as agents, SCSMs, Field Leadership and Home Office staff.
- Participation on project teams and implementations focused on the broader improvement of the organization.
- Talent acquisition, development, and retention.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred and 8+ years of applicable new business or renewal underwriting experience including proven results in production, service, and quality metrics.
- Prior leadership experience required.
- Expert knowledge of Small Commercial strategies, products, and capabilities as well as demonstrates a familiarity of other Hanover franchise capabilities.
- Consultative resource to drive Small Commercial strategies across the enterprise.
- High-level proficiencies in underwriting execution and makes appropriate decisions within own underwriting authority and independently sets account strategy, occasionally partners with manager to set account strategy.
- Has the ability to create a consensus on accounts.
- Ability to consistently work independently.

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience.
