The Insurance Coordinator performs a variety of responsible functions and tasks related to insurance payments and claims including but not limited to: initiating payment of dental claims, auditing and adjusting provider insurance company benefits to patients. Employees in this classification receive direct to general supervision with a broad framework of policies and procedures. Job Duties: ? Performs review of dental claims for payment of benefits, checking for completeness and returning claims for additional information as appropriate. ? Processes pre-authorization of coverage for patients prior to scheduled appointments, indicates policy limitations related to procedures being reviewed and calculates amount to be paid (co-pays, etc.). ? Creates new data and updates insurance provider information for patient claims billing. ? Verifies patient eligibility for coverage of claims received, checking appropriate records for birth date, social security number (or subscriber ID #), date of eligibility and type of coverage. ? Analyzes claims for possible discrepancies including duplication of services, duplication of billing and incorrect procedure identification. ? Identifies applicable primary insurance carriers for claims received and coordinates payment of benefits with primary carriers. ? Calculates amounts payable for claims received according to established guidelines, enters payment amounts into accounts payable records and submits to supervisor for approval. ? Maintains high awareness regarding status of claims, dental plan benefits and insurance aging report, addressing daily. ? Obtains information related to coordination of benefits, dental treatments, fees charged and clarification of claims from staff and insurance companies. ? Maintains accurate reports and prepares reports related to dental claims received, paid, pending and in-process. ? Processes and monitors accounts payable and receivable related to dental claims, making accurate financial postings to reports and ledgers. ? Performs auditing of claims reimbursements, maintaining audit trails and ensuring proper fiscal control. ? Operates internal accounting information systems (Dentrix), microcomputer hardware and software including spreadsheet and word processing programs (Excel and Word). ? Serves as an information source or intermediary regarding dental insurance and dental claims. ? Maintains accurate records and prepares reports related to dental claims processing. ? Identifies problem areas or situations, determines problem causes, and takes appropriate action to resolve identified problems. ? Makes arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately, identifies and corrects arithmetical errors made by others. ? Interprets and applies laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines applicable to the establishment of dental insurance claims and processing. ? Assists with establishing new patient and recall appointments, collects/distributes mail and fills in for other front office workers. Education, Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required ? High school diploma or GED. ? Proficiency in English usage required to include grammar, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure, bilingual in Spanish a plus. ? Ability to work independently as well as part of a professional team. ? Graduate of an accredited program in insurance coding and billing a plus. ? Previous experience with medical/dental clinic desirable. ? Proficiency with Dentrix, Word and Excel. ? Strong knowledge of math. ? Understanding of dental procedures and terminology. ? The practice maintains a steady surgical schedule and the candidate should be able to work well under pressure. Obtain approval for and order all physical therapy, CT Scans, MRI?s & make arrangements with vendors and insurance companies before surgery to arrange for post-operative care, including, but not limited to, wound vacs and home health services. 14. Assist with back office duties when seeing patient pre and post operatively. 15. Other responsibilities as needed and required for the practice.
